I’m the first to admit that I sweat at the drop of a hat, which makes commuting a much dirtier job in the summer. Aside from refreshing myself with a cleansing wipe or two as soon as I get to my destination, it’s still hard to look put together after enduring the swelter of the subway.

Some looks need more than just a little concealer and mascara though we all try to lighten the makeup load during this time of year. And sure, primers are a great option to keep your look in place, but unfortunately, not all can stand up to oilier skin types when it mixes with sweat. There have so many times where visible rivulets of sweat have carved through my contour and transformed me into a cross between a zombie and a drowned witch—and it was not Halloween. So whether you’re putting together a spectacular Fourth of July look or searching for beauty buys that won’t budge amidst the sun, surf, and sweat of the season, I’ve pulled together some of the most fabulous formulas (with a patriotic twist of course) you need to add to your cart ASAP!

Who says you can’t cut a crease in the middle of summer? Make Up For Ever made a serious splash when it launched its Aqua XL Eye Pencils earlier this month. With an array of 20 shades to play with, you can easily create intricate eye creations or smudge them for a smoldering look that won’t go up in smoke if you start to sweat or if you decide to splash around to beat the heat. Maybelline’s continuing its crush on Color Tattoo with its newest iteration that hits shelves this month! The Eye Chromes come in a shimmering series of neutral tones save for Sapphire, which you can see above, so you can get your (eye) shine on from sun up to sun down and beyond. Fusion Beauty is serving up a solution for those who want to forgo faux lashes to get the look without worrying about water, thanks to its new Xtension Dramatically Lengthening Fiber Mascara‘s waterproof formula.

Longwear lippies have been on the rise, but Urban Decay hasn’t let any lippie look slip since its 24/7 Lip Pencils first hit shelves. Regardless of what lip color you select, you can skip the worry about matching if you opt for the clear lip liner or a nude that matches your natural lip color to lock it in for hours on end. Before Kylie ever crafted a lip kit, NYX was creating long-lasting lip colors in hues many would never dare to wear until today, and its Liquid Suede has had plenty of us smitten, and it’s just added 12 new shades to play with. Elizabeth Arden went to great lengths to ensure its Bold Liquid Lipsticks could handle the waves, even test-driving the product on the Aqualillies, so it will be sure to make  a serious splash when it hits shelves later this month.

If you do decide to keep it to just concealer, you’ll want one that sticks to the skin and doesn’t crack under pressure, and luckily, Lancôme’s Effacernes Waterproof works to neutralize and cover dark circles and spots in a wide range of shades that blend in seamlessly. Kevyn Aucoin’s iconic The Sensual Skin Enhancer is your face in a pot. It not only works as a concealer but can be blended out into a proper foundation and layered on to get the coverage you want without water getting in the way; just remember that a little of this goes a loooong way. Whether you use it to add a bit of burnish to your face or you’re opting to completely contour, Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer delivers that natural warm glow when you’re sweating glistening in the sun. Just don’t forget to double cleanse afterwards to make sure your pores stay clear.
