Hairstylist April Schuller makes changing up your coif seems effortless. As the hair guru behind hits like Girls and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, she regularly balances the cool-girl realness of the HBO hit with the Netflix’s more stylized strands. I recently go to sit down with the celebrity tress tamer, thanks to Hask, to learn how she handles double beauty duty on set, her favorite hair must-haves, and what looks she predicts will explode this season.

What’s the difference in your approach to Girls as opposed to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?

It’s very different because Girls is such a natural look whereas Kimmy Schmidt is more stylized. On Girls, we really try to maintain the natural look and texture of the hair. The DP [Director of Photography] and everyone [say] flyaways are great, whereas when you’re working on a show that’s more stylized like Kimmy Schmidt, every little piece has to be in place.

Since Kimmy Schmidt is so stylized, is there a look you’d love to see one of the characters play around with?

I can’t really say anything, but you’ll see there’s more experimentation this season. The thing about Kimmy Schmidt is we do a lot of flashbacks, and they really introduce new characters whereas with Girls, you kind of try to maintain what somebody looks like when they come in. With Kimmy Schmidt, there’s more talk goes into building that character, making someone not as recognizable as an actor or actress, which is really fun.

What’s your go-to hairstyler when you’re on set?

I feel like dry shampoo works on everybody, and it works on clean hair as well as dirty hair. It does because there’s a light hold with it still, a little bit, so I feel you can do a lot with that product. It’s really versatile. The [Hask Essentials Instant Clean] Dry Shampoo is the best that I’ve encountered. It’s clear without dulling the color, especially on dark hair, nd it’s one of the main reasons I really like it. There’s no frothy residue that you get with some dry shampoos—it really kind of evaporates into the hair.  I’ll use it sometimes on clean hair just because I like the volume and texture it gives. But I also love that paired with the Revive & Refresh [Hair Fragrance Mist] that eliminates odors, and it also takes out static.

What hair looks do you think will be big for the spring and summer?

We’ve had a lot of waves for a really long time, but I wonder if the straight and sleek look is going to come back. I think it might come into something that’s a bit more natural, even colorwise. I think the ombre’s going to fade out a bit, or at least the extreme ombre that we’ve seen the past couple of seasons. But [the big blowout] will be back in a couple of years.
