GTL: The Boldest Beauty Looks of the 2018 Golden Globes

GTL – Get the Look, not Gym, Tan, Laundry, duh!

When I first heard that the women of Hollywood were choosing to wear black gowns to this year’s Golden Globes in protest of sexual harassment in all industries, I was actually pretty excited! I believed the all-black dress code would also foster more fun and creative hair and makeup looks as well. While most stuck to more natural looks, I was psyched to see many stars stepping out of their red carpet comfort zones when it came to their beauty looks.

But the evening was about way more than just gowns and glamour. These women created a visual protest against a system that for too long has valued women less, in many senses of the word and in all industries, (which could be even worse for a person of color, those who are LGBT+, and/or have a disability) and were and still are punished for speaking out. And when the Time’s Up Legal Defense fund was announced, I was even more thrilled as it would not only help without the same visibility or financial status as these actresses but also provide tangible help to fight alongside them as well as push for legislation to help level the playing field for all.

While the fashion made the biggest statement of the evening, many actresses served up style with substance. A few brought activists like senior director of the nonprofit Girls for Gender Equity and founder of the #MeToo movement Tarana Burke (who went with Michelle Williams) as their guests. And most skipped the constant “Who are you wearing?” question in order to make direct calls to action for their peers and viewers to learn more and get involved. In fact, Debra Messing and Eva Longoria set the tone for the evening by calling out E! (while on E!) about its equal pay dispute with Catt Sadler, siding with the former on-air correspondent who recently left the network after discovering her male co-anchor was paid more than her.

But even with such a big night filled inspiration, insight, and Oprah, I still wanted to share some of  the details on how to recreate the looks from the hairstylists and makeup artists so you in case you want to recreate these glamorous looks for your next special occasion.

Viola Davis — Hairstylist Jamika Williams told Refinery29 that she was inspired by the evening focus on raising the voices of women in every industry, opting to create a look that was as bold and beautiful as the collective choice. And it truly spoke volumes! Davis’s plush afro was the result of a twist-out, using As I Am’s Curling Jelly Definer and Doublebutter Cream, stretching out the curls by using an Afro and blowdryer with a diffuser and a little bit of Shea Moisture’s Red Palm & Cocoa Butter Curl Stretching Pudding to prevent shrinkage. But I also couldn’t get over the dazzling coppery shadow and matching metallic lipstick that shimmered with the perfect splash of color!

Alison Williams — While subtle, Williams’s makeup not only stood out, but also stuck close to the 2017’s sunset eyes trend that has yet to slow down any time soon. After prepping the Get Out actress’s skin with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream and Micro-Blur Skin Perfector, makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan channeled the citrus twist on William’s gown by applying Avon’s True Color Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Quad in Warm Sunrise all over the lid. Deenihan then layered the brown tone in the quad under the brand’s True Color Glimmersticks Eye Liner in Cosmic Brown along her lashline for added dimension and adding a few coats of mascara. The makeup maestro then added a sun-kissed flush with a dusting of the True Color Luminous Blush in Warm Honey and the upcoming True Color Illuminating Stick, finishing the look with True Color Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Perfectly Nude.

Issa Rae — Issa has become one to watch on the red carpet thanks to not only her chic style but also her equally exquisite hairstyles that quickly transform into trends. As such, I can totally see the low, braided bun created by Felicia Leatherwood will inspire a slew of similar styles for special occasions. The hair also allowed her sparkling smoky eye that matched her Prabal Gurung gown as well as her glossy lip to truly shine through!

Millie Bobby Brown —  Just like Eleven’s transformation in season two of Stranger Things, Milllie’s style has made a total 180 compared to her look last year, as evidenced by this perfect tweet from NBC. Brown’s killer cat-eye came courtesy of Deenihan and Avon’s True Color Glimmersticks Eye Liner in Black with a few layers of mascara and a little of Kiehl’s Butterstick Lip Treatment to round out the look. But her hair truly took the crown with bun that was business in the front, party (and a couple of cornrows) in the back. Bitchin’!

Mary J. Blige — The queen of Hip Hop Soul was nominated for her role in Netflix’s Mudbound, but Blige’s beauty blew me away. Her sultry smoky eye and glossy lip set her smolder on the red carpet, came courtesy of  D’Andre Michael. He used Marc Jacobs’s Beauty Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Glambition, patting the shade “Over The Top” on her entire eyelid, “Glamour” from the lash to crease, and “Infamous” along the brow bone. Michael then applied the brand’s Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer 42 along the bottom of the eyelid, smudged the shade “Glamour” from the Glambition palette along her bottom lashes, and added a few coats of mascara for good measure. To polish her pout, Michael layered the Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Slow Burn under the Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Lipgloss in Skin Deep.

But it was her voluminous updo that really took centerstage. The look created by Larry Sims featured a bumped-up bouffant on top, a low chignon at the nape of her neck, and a few tendrils to frame her face, making her mane reminiscent of similar red carpet coif that stars sported in the ’90s. Talk about a throwback tress trend!

Emily Ratajkowski — While the model and actress wasn’t on hand for the ceremony, she certainly made a colorful splash at the InStyle Golden Globes afterparty. Marc Jacobs Beauty Global Artistry Ambassador Hung Vanngo created the red, winged smoky eye by lining her entire waterlines and upper and lower lash lines with Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Fine(wine) 47 and smudging it into shape. He then blended hues from the Beauty Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Scandalust to apply on her crease and lower lash line to further define the shape. He then tied the look together with a little mascara and nude lipstick as well as a sweep of the Beauty Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 520 Lines & Last Night on her cheeks.

Tracee Ellis Ross — The #TimesUp founder is known for her eclectic and electrifying style as well as her keep-it-simple makeup routine. While you can never go wrong with a classic red lip, makeup artist Fara Homidi added extra allure by pairing it with a fully lined eye and loads of mascara. Plus, I couldn’t get enough of her gorgeous black silk Marc Jacobs turban and matching gown.

Debra Messing — Before Messing took E! to task on its gender pay inequity, she stunned everyone on the red carpet in a sparkling rendition of the evening’s black dress code in Christian Siriano. To double up on the dazzle of the ensemble, the star sported a similarly shimmering, deep green smoky winged shadow (created by makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo) that paired well with the emerald jewelry that she wore as a symbol of her commitment to Time’s Up’s initiative for positive change.

Samira Wiley — Whether she’s rocking lengthy locks, a closely cropped coif, or anything in between, I love that Samira isn’t afraid to play with her look. Her cascade of curls atop her head, crafted by hairstylist John Wright, perfectly framed her smiling face. And the pale, diffused shadow paired with her glossy berry lip, done by Marlaine Reiner, offered a fun contrast that looked lovely with the gilded detail on her Romona Keveža gown.

Katherine Langford —  I was already in love with the 13 Reasons Why star’s sparkly smoky eye, but I became gobsmacked with a simple turn of her head. Why? Pinning back Langford’s Veronica Lake-inspired waves were a constellation of sparkling Chopard hair jewels shaped like stars!

Keala Settle — The Broadway babe and best song nominee stood in the spotlight in a black and green Siriano gown. And with a closer look at her makeup, I fell head over heels for the glints of green that smoldered along her lashline and the glossy lip that balanced out the bold eye — all done by makeup master Fabiola. Hairstylist Sami Knight gave her a swath of lush, wavy locks to rock on the red carpet.

Zuri Hall —  Last but not least, the E! host lit up the night with a bold dash of glittering blue shadow, which came courtesy of makeup artist Niki Metz, and glossy textured bob whipped up by Abraham Esparza to add a modern and effortless appeal to her Bronx and Banco dress.
