Show Your Stash: Mecca Woods’s Bold Beauty Muses, Love of Lip Color, & Much More

I know I’m not the only one curious about celebs and influencers’ favorite beauty buys as well as who and what shape their view of beauty in the biz.

The biggest trend of 2018 isn’t mermaids or unicorns, it’s actually your zodiac sign. It seems like more and more of us are turning the stars to not only shine a light on the energies in our lives (on monthly, weekly, or daily basis) but also to help us in unexpected areas of our lives, including helping us discover our signature style, indulging our cosmic character traits with the latest beauty trends, and of course, scoring anything with our zodiac sign emblazoned or inspired by it. Sure, everyone has their own level of skepticism about it. But like other self-care practices (hey, some of us consider our morning makeup routine or a sumptuous bath to be meditative), our horoscopes can offer a peek into our lives that we might not notice on the surface, help guide us when we’re feeling lost, and even give us comfort. Like beauty, it’s all what you make of it.

It’s the same approach that Mecca Woods has taken to her own life, even adapting her social services background and experiences as a mom and partner to launch an astro-coaching practice that has led her to become the go-to astrologer for outlets like Bustle, EssencePopSugar, and more. And for her, it also applies to beauty. After noticing how close to home her horoscopes tended to hit (and taking her advice to heart), I started following the star siren on Instagram and Twitter and fell in love with her penchant for pop culture cues to the cosmos, her chic and kaleidoscopic sense of style, and, of course, her love for bold lip looks.

With her book Astrology For Happiness and Success slated to hit shelves this fall and an increasing array of listicles devoted to looking at every aspect of our signs filling our feeds daily, I figured it was only right to turn the tables and ask the astrologer extraordinaire to share what inspires her beauty choices — other than the stars — discover her number one summer essential, and find out if a zodiac beauty collection by Woods could be written in the stars.

On her approach to style: “I like to have a little ‘wow’ going, something that catches the eye and makes a statement, like a haute red lip or an electric blue eyeliner applied to my waterline. I love statement pieces — that bright pop of color; that funky, chunky piece of jewelry; or that wild and crazy print. I don’t want to do too much. I just want to give people enough so that they don’t forget it.”

On her biggest beauty idols:Grace Jones, Donna Summer, Danai Gurira, Solange. They don’t fit into the mainstream standard of beauty, and they manage to slay every time. From the colors and the prints, the hair, the quirkiness, the creativity…the GLAM! They each have an iconic style by being true to the things that make them standout in the first place.”

On her first beauty memory: “This isn’t my first beauty memory, but it is one of my earliest beauty memories: I must have been around 13 years old and this guy I knew, he used to cut hair for all the boys in the neighborhood. At one point, he started doing this eyebrow design, where he would take a pair of clippers and create these little “cuts” or lines in their eyebrows – like Big Daddy Kane used to wear. I asked him to do it for me and he did. I was the only girl on the block with that style. I thought I was bad AF.”

On her first beauty buy: “It was a plum hair rinse that I bought with money I made from my first job – working in a supermarket as a cashier. It might have been by Dark and Lovely. My mom wouldn’t let me dye my hair nor would she let me lighten it. She said I could do a rinse, though – the color washes put after a few shampoos. I chose plum because I thought the purple was pretty and different enough from my own hair color. I was SO excited. It brought me some compliments too.”

On the best beauty advice she’s received: “I’ve been told a few times by makeup artists and hairstylists alike that there was no reason why I couldn’t wear bright colors on my face or dye my hair super blonde. Years ago, I used to think I was too dark-skinned to pull off either. I know better now.”

On her number one beauty tip to share: “A clear lip gloss or lip balm. When I’m not in the mood to wear makeup and I’m out barefaced – wearing a good, clear lip gloss or a juicy lip balm makes me feel like my face is camera ready. No ashy lips here!”

On her summer essentials: “Any beauty buys you’re dying to get your hands on? Pat McGrath has this matte, red lipstick called Vendetta that I’ve been coveting. I see that ‘loaded’ lashes are also coming back for this summer. That’s a good thing because they never left for me.”

On developing her own zodiac-inspired beauty collection: “The only thing I can think of are nourishing sheet masks infused with aromatherapy. Each of the 12 masks would be created from a scent that corresponds to and benefits each the 12 zodiac signs. I’m big on beauty as a self-care ritual and I think this infuses the two.”

Is This The Secret To Making Face Masks More Effective?

Embed from Getty Images

When it comes to skincare, we tend to treat face masks as miracle workers in the pursuit of flawless skin. Not to mention it offers an opportunity to snap a selfie mid-mask, or if you’re like me, share your weekly skincare routine on social media (so if you’re not tuning in, you’re totally missing out!). But regardless of whether the mask is meant to moisturize, detoxify, brighten, or lift, we might not be making the most of the stuff we put on our faces.

While sheet masks do an amazing job of softening, smoothing, and brightening on skin’s surface, Sumbody Skincare Founder Deborah Burnes recently told SheFinds that those mid-pore masks, which feed skin with vitamins, nutrients, and other active ingredients, and deep-pore masks, which break up all the old dirt and grease, need more effort to be effective. Letting your mask of choice dry as you scroll through your social media feed won’t do as much as you’d expect as it only works on the surface. And in some instances, it can exacerbate skin issues like acne and make skin look worse. “Using a mask this way reverts it back to a powder which clogs your pores rather than feed them; that means your pores are being filled with more gunk,” she said.

Her suggestion? Slather on your face mask after stepping into the shower. It helps open up the pores and allows the mask to penetrate the pores even deeper. It’s why facialists use a steam machine during every treatment so that whatever’s been lurking deep in your pores will come to the surface allow whatever skincare products to sink in further. “It’s the beautiful moist heat in the shower that acts like a gentle steam and creates this skin-loving magic,” Burnes explained to the site. “The steam also keeps the active ingredients alive and viable and keeps the mask potent.”

Talk about an easy and cost-effective way to get that spa experience! It looks like I’ll have to start snapping my #SkincareSunday Showdown stories from my shower — hey I’m already prone to taking pictures in my bathroom anyway.

#OnMyVanity: The Mega Moisturizers That Helped My Skin Survive Winter

A post shared by Val’s Vanity (@valsvanity) on

I receive a slew of samples, and when I find something I like, I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Proper hydration is essential in maintaining the health of your skin and hair no matter the season. But the winter’s high-speed winds, chilly temperatures, and the subsequent use of dry heat to keep warm can make dry skin anywhere on the body feel extra parched. It’s something my skin has dealt for years, sometimes drying out to the point of splitting (yeah, ouch!). Since I started writing about beauty, I’ve slathered on a slew of serums, lotions, creams, butters, and beyond to keep my skin and strands supple season after season on a mission to find formulas that not only deeply nourish but also pass the doorknob test (you know, when you’re trying to turn a doorknob after moisturizing).

Sure, Spring (and my birthday) are only a few weeks away, but we’ve faced a pretty weird winter filled with fluctuating temperatures, plenty of blustery, grey days, and dry indoor heat. With a slew of moisturizers on the market at the moment, I decided to roll up my sleeves to slather on a slew of samples to see which beauty buys could sustain the suppleness of my skin throughout the harsh season.

Let’s take it from the top (to toe), shall we?

Soap & Glory’s Ups It Spa-Worthy Supply of Beauty Buys

When it comes to self-care (which I think we all need more of), sometimes all it takes to soothe yourself is a spa-worthy shower or a super indulgent soak in the tub. Soap & Glory is enhancing the experience with a stockpile of bubbling bath and beauty buys — complete with punny names you won’t get enough of — that won’t break the bank. In fact, the bubbles kept popping up Wednesday night as editors were treated to a first look at all of the upcoming products with a fresh array of fizzy cocktails, a shower outfitted with a bubble machine, a few faucets that dispensed a mix of seltzer and champagne (really refreshing!), and a cute clawfoot tub that I couldn’t help but slip into myself.

#OnMyVanity: Herbivore Botanicals’ Blue Tansy AHA + BHA Resurfacing Clarity Mask

I receive a slew of samples, and when I find something I like, I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

By now, everyone’s posted and later rolled their eyes at the phrase “New Year, New Me,” but one resolution I’ve been trying to stick to is taking better care of my skin. Which not only means keeping my face hydrated and protected but also sticking to a regualr masking schedule. But as many masks as I have in my menagerie, I only use them when my face looks especially hurt, like after the dust settles on a bad breakout. I know, I know, I should know better, especially as a acne sufferer.

Many of the masks I have on hand take a while to work (we’re talking 20 minutes sometimes); some not only need a good rinse but also a couple of cotton pads soaked in micellar water to make your skin clean sometimes, and others formulated with harsh chemical exfoliants tend to make my skin feel tight and sensitized. So it’s easy to get a little lazy about that part of your skincare routine.

Volition Beauty Brings Product Power to the People

Have you ever searched the shelves for the right formula for you but end up empty-handed? Ever have a favorite product of your end up in the trash because of a formula change? Now you can skip the wishful thinking and do something about it—create your own with the help of Volition Beauty.

Inspired by the many gaps in the beauty market, founders Brandy Hoffman and Patricia Santos banded together to create a community of beauty buffs to craft the everyday essentials they couldn’t find at their local Sephora without waiting years for big brands to give them what they need. “I think when Brandy and I were coming up with the concept, we had an idea that this would work, and we thought, ‘We believe in democratizing beauty. We believe in empowering women. We believe women can solve their own problems. We believe they’re smart and creative.’ And that’s where all of the product ideas should start. But we had no idea what would happen when we built the platform,” Santos explained during the brand’s press event on Tuesday.

So what happened? It exploded! Not literally, but thousands of women signed up for the platform back in September to submit their ideas for cool and innovative products and shipped the first batch in November. Users can easily submit their ideas and, depending on the difficulty of the formula (and whether they have to patent new technologies), you could see your idea come to life in anywhere between three weeks to a year as a prototype that you and your friends can test-drive to ensure the formula is just right and safe to use. Next, the brand posts the product as a campaign on the website where it’s voted on by the community. If a campaign wins, it’s only 3 to 6 weeks to ship to you in small batches, instead of the two years it typically takes big brands to debut a new buy, always keeping the brand on the edge of the next discovery. “I think what’s key is that it’s not just trends, it’s innovation,” Santos said. “It’s not only an outlet for creative women. I think it’s been an outlet for the underserved in the beauty industry.”

It may be in its infancy, but the platform already boasts a dozen SKUs for skin and body with more coming down the pipeline soon. And you’ll be able to get your hands on them without leaving your couch, as the brand will debut on QVC in August, so keep a look out!

Though I got a preview of some of the skincare essentials that will hit shelves soon, the one item that blew me (and everyone else) away was the Pamona: Custom Gel Mask. It works like an Easy-Bake Oven but for your face. Simply add water with fruit juices that cater to your skin’s specific needs (like berries for added antioxidants, citrus for brightening, cucumber for hydration, etc.), drop in one of the gel tabs, push a button, and five minutes later you have a mask made fresh just for you. I know editors and beauty techies will snap this up super fast for their own use, but it could easily provide a bit of pampering with your pals (Hello, spa-worthy bachelorette weekend!). Needless to say, this is a brand I’ll be keeping a close eye on!
