CoverGirl Launches Its Largest Shade Range of Foundations Ever

The drugstore beauty aisle is going to need to make more room on its shelves for CoverGirl this summer, as the brand is the latest to launch an inclusive shade range of foundations.

After last year’s Fenty Foundation Frenzy sent a shockwave in the industry, CoverGirl sought to create a complexion cosmetic that would meet the needs of makeup mavens of all shades by connecting with them directly through interviews as well as on every social media platform. The result is the upcoming TruBlend Matte Made Foundation, which is slated to hit shelves in June for $8.49. It boasts medium to full coverage, a long-wearing matte finish, and 40 shades made to match 99% of skin tones. And the brand has made discovering your perfect shade a breeze by labeling the bottle with four numbered ranges, Light (L), Medium (M), Tan (T) and Deep (D), as well as warm, cool, and neutral undertone call-outs.

The fresh formula also checks off every box that beauty buffs have for their dream foundation. That includes flexi-hold technology that responds to your facial movements but doesn’t budge an inch, so there’s no transfer or awkward patches of melted makeup. There’s also an oil-absorbing powder that holds 2x its weight as well as light scattering technology whose powers combine to ensure your skin stays picture perfect and shine-free throughout the day — all without weighing it down.

While we still have a month to wait to actually get our hands on it to the dismay of many fans who were excited to test-drive the fresh formula as soon as possible. But we’ve already seen the formula in action. It had a star-studded debut earlier this week as both Issa Rae and Katy Perry rocked the coverup on the red carpet of the 2018 Met Gala where both looked utterly ethereal.

CoverGirl’s latest launch is another ripple in the recent wave of change to the industry, which has been in the midst of a major makeover after ignoring the needs of consumers of color for years. But it has been making strides to offer inclusive options for every budget. While listening to the concerns of consumers of all backgrounds should be the priority of any brand, it seems the industry is trying to turn the corner towards a future where everyone can have fun with cosmetics.

Massy Arias Makes Serious Moves With CoverGirl’s New Mascara

Photo: CoverGirl via YouTube.

You might’ve spotted her as you scroll through Instagram or even signed up for her MA30Day Programs to build up your strength. But Massy Arias, better known as Mankofit, is moving beyond our social stream to take over our TV and newsstands as the face of CoverGirl’s latest launch, Flourish by Lash Blast Mascara, as part of its #IAmWhatIMakeUp campaign.

The personal trainer and model first found fitness as a way to work through her depression and found it to be a drug she couldn’t get enough of and spurred her to help others. According to Trimmed and Toned, Arias began making a splash on social media after setting up boot camps and workout classes in parks around New York City where they became popular through word of mouth and her Instagram. Her motivational posts, featuring tips on proper nutrition and technique as well as a variety of different workouts (like resistance training, calisthenics, yoga, high intensity interval training, and sprinting) for fans to try, built a following of millions and foster a community built on hard work and dedication to fitness goals, no matter what they were. And she has the opportunity to reach beyond the fitness community in her first video ad which was unveiled on Tuesday and that you can check out below.

Arias saw her partnership with CoverGirl as a way to not only continue to shake up beauty standards but also show how they can change their lives by taking care of themselves whether it’s with a workout or a swipe of mascara in the morning. “The standard of beauty is continuing to change; it starts with finding beauty in what sets you apart and owning it,” she captioned a sneak peek of the clip on Instagram. “Every milestone I hit makes me more humble than I was before.”

And every milestone hit should come with some reward! In fact, that need for self-care was what initially sparked the idea for the fresh formula in the first place. The mascara uses a blend of papaya, avocado, and coconut oils to nourish and condition while defining each lash and pumping up their volume for lashes that look lush and feel strong with no clumps or flakes to be found. Since the new mascara shouldn’t flake or smudge, I bet it would hold up well during an intense sweat session whether you’re working out with Arias’s program or doing your own thing. As long as you’re taking time for yourself, that’s all that should matter.

Walmart Is Branching Out Into Beauty Boxes Too — And For Less Than $10!

Photo via Walmart.com

Chances are that when you sign up for a subscription box — whether it’s for hot sauce, snacks, or beauty buys — you’re not going to get anything bigger than what is allowed through airport security. Aside from weighing down the box itself, scoring something full-sized can send the price of the subscription skyrocketing. But that’s not the case for Walmart which just announced the debut of its own line of beauty boxes!

Priced at $9.98 each, the Walmart Beauty Favorites Boxes offer some of its most popular must-haves for your eyes, lips, skin, curls, and more valued between $20-$40 with a mix of mini and full-sized products. Housed in electrically vibrant boxes, each handles a different beauty need whether it’s a dramatic eye look, a plush pout, gorgeously glowy skin, defined and frizz-free curls, or a way to clean up your beauty routine. But you’re not going to want to wait to pick one up while you shop since, according to Bustle, there’s a limited number of boxes available both online and at 3,000 store locations.

Amy Deanna Becomes The First CoverGirl Model With Vitiligo

A post shared by COVERGIRL (@covergirl) on

You might not know Amy Deanna yet, but she’s bound to become a household name after this! The Texas native was just named the new face of CoverGirl‘s #IAmWhatIMakeUp campaign for its TruBlend foundations, making her the brand’s first spokesperson with vitiligo.

Though you might have seen her featured in spreads for Atlas Magazine, it’s a huge opportunity for the up-and-coming model to help make the beauty industry more inclusive, starting with the first video ad which was unveiled Tuesday morning. In the clip, Deanna is featured not covering up her spots but instead using two of the brand’s foundations to make both of her skin’s hues look absolutely flawless.

“Inclusivity is important—not just for people of different backgrounds and ethnicities, but also people of all sizes,” she told People. “That’s why I was so excited to partner with CoverGirl on this project. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. Let’s face it, together we are a mosaic—that in itself is beautiful. We should celebrate that.”

Though the mega model in the making is helping to further break down beauty barriers, she notes that the industry still has a ways to go when it comes to diversity. “I believe that inclusiveness will challenge unrealistic beauty standards within the beauty industry and in humanity,” she told the glossy. “I remember seeing Queen Latifah on TV as a CoverGirl when I was young. That was so inspiring.”

In fact, many of CoverGirl’s famous faces, including Queen Latifah, Rihanna, Issa Rae, and Zendaya, are stars she looked up to as she began her modeling career and is now following in their footsteps. Not to mention joining the likes of fellow model Winnie Harlow and the legendary Michel Jackson who have shared their struggles with vitiligo, a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches that can occur all over the body as well as the hair and the inside of the mouth, according to The Mayo Clinic.

“At the end of the day I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am … For there to be so many of us and so little representation, it’s truly disheartening,” Deanna said. “I work with CoverGirl; I’m a black woman; I have vitiligo. That is empowering.” And that is a badass way to put it — congrats Amy!

#OnMyVanity: 7 Mascaras That Will Make You Forget About Falsies

A post shared by Val’s Vanity (@valsvanity) on

I receive a slew of samples, and when I find something I like, I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

When it comes to the pursuit of long, lush lashes, most of us can’t leave home without applying a little bit of mascara or even applying a pair of false lashes before leaving the house. While they’re great for dramatic effect and a slew of selfies, faux lashes aren’t a fit for everyone’s daily routine whether it’s due to waiting for the glue to dry, getting the strip to sit close to your lashline, handling the heavier load on your lashes, or just having your lengthier lashes pressed against your glasses all day (like me). So finding a formula that mimics the look of false lashes without the extra steps (and the aggravation that can come with it) has become a big priority for me in order for my lashes to be visible behind my frames.

And with National Lash Day here, I decided to dig through the drawers of my vanity to share some of my favorite formulas that get me the lust-worthy lashes without transforming them into spider legs or sticking to my glasses. These mascara not only fatten up your lashes but ensures that they reach new heights — no falsies necessary.

Star Wars: The Fragrance Awakens

When it comes to Star Wars, there is no such thing as too much merch if 2015 was any indication. And the train shows no slowing down with a collection of fragrances hitting beauty counters in a galaxy far, far away (actually, it’s Europe).

German fragrance house Lifestyle Perfumes has just released a series of three scents inspired by the iconic film franchise with two scents for men, modeled after the light and dark side of the force, and one for women—all housed in bottles shaped like lightsabers! This seems to be fleshing out the blockbuster’s hold on the beauty counter, as it previously partnered with CoverGirl for a collection of makeup musts to celebrate the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Jedi is light and bright with fresh notes of mandarin, water lily, and amber while Empire is a spicier affair with notes of cardamom, clove, and patchouli. While specific notes aren’t listed for Amidala, judging by the image the brand shared on Instagram, it appears to be very sweet thanks to tangerine, chocolate, and vanilla in the image and housed in a bottle that matches the color scheme of her Elizabethan-inspired ensemble the Queen wore on her picnic with Anakin on Naboo. There’s a lot of citrus throughout the collection, according to io9. But given its release in June (prime citrus season) and the recent installment, the company could’ve focused their setting on the more lush planets in the galaxy like Endor, D’Qar, and the aforementioned Naboo.

Well if I had known about this sooner, I would’ve just snapped this up for my dad for Father’s Day! Unfortunately, the collection is only available in Europe with no word on if/when it will hit shelves stateside. Now’s the time to get in touch with your forum friends across the pond and see if they can ship you the cool cosmetic collectibles.

GTL: The Boldest Beauty Looks of the 2016 Met Gala

GTL – Get the Look, not Gym, Tan, Laundry, duh!

When this year’s  Met Gala theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology,” was announced, I instantly had visions of cyberpunk pretty — sharp slashes of eyeliner, manicures using bits of motherboards, and cascades of chrome. While most played it safe this year, letting their custom glittering gowns (crafted with the latest technology) do all of the talking, I was psyched to see many stars embracing the theme fully and stepping out of their regular red carpet glamor routine. I got the details on how to recreate the looks straight from the hairstylists and makeup artist to ensure you stand out at the next social gathering on your calendar.

Katy Perry Digs Her Creative Claws into CoverGirl

Katy Kat Campaign-final

Courtesy of CoverGirl

After a series of successful scents, Katy Perry‘s coming back to the beauty counter with a namesake collaboration with CoverGirl.

The pop star shared the new via Twitter on Friday, stating, “After several wonderful years of BEING the face, I now get to CREATE the face!” Her profile on the platform even offered a sneak preview of the collection, which features a new mascara and 13 highly pigmented (yet hydrating) demi-matte lipsticks that range from classic reds, pinks, and nudes, to pumped up purples and even a black one, aptly named Perry Panther. (Meow! ?)

Like most beauty buffs, Perry turned to the internet to find inspiration. She admitted to developing a mild Tumblr addiction—haven’t we all?— as she spent a year curating a covetable color palette. “You know, a black lipstick or a blue mascara is very Tumblr—I told them, this is what’s happening online, this is what everyone’s Instagramming.” she told Vogue. “Tumblr to me is a safe place because it’s more about the art than the conversations—it’s not about likes, so it’s not a narcissistic social platform. I like that it’s a more pure place that is more creative.”

The cool cosmetics won’t hit shelves until July, but everything’s already up for pre-order exclusively at Walmart.com where the first 100 Katy Kats and makeup mavens can receive a tube of Perry Panther signed by the songstress herself. If I get to rock black lipstick like I did in my goth hey-day in high school, I’m signing up ASAP!

Check out a few snaps from the collection below:
